Lesson Two-Movei Makeup: From DIY to Digital Effects

Summary

Lon Chaney was an early silent movies star who use gestures to communicate with his deaf parents. He is perhaps most famous for the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Phantom of the Opera to transformed into monsters and often applied his own make up. Making the makeup faces usually by computers, and it also make some mythical creatures, monster and many strange roles. But specialty makeup also important to movie make up. The Oscar was for Makeup and the movie about 7 faces of Dr. Lao. There is a makeup movie called Planet of the Apes which talks about a remade spaceship from Earth travels through a time warp, and landing on Earth. And because of the time warp, the apes evolved as the most intelligent species and also control the human beings. Besides using face paint, actors in earlier movies used featured extensive prostheses to change their appearance. An America Werewolf in London won the Academy Award, which was done by Rich Backer, who undergo with movie make up when he was 10 years old. Horror movies and magazine inspired him a lot. Baker has a job that is to work on movies. For example, King Kong and Star Wars. Michael Jackson's music video Thriller was also be used to change people into animals. A Makeup academy award was given to Quest for Fire in 1982. Some characters are still looked like ape, and their conversations are hard for anyone to realize. Recreating a look based on how people might have looked in the past. In the end of this paragraph, it talk about the reason why the movie "Elizabeth " can win the award. Horror and science fiction movies were the main trend that caused the constitution of awards since the end of 20th century and the early 21th century. Mexcian artist Frida Kahlo won the 2002 Academy Award for makeup. The actress said that Frida tried to capture the reality, but keep attractiveness as an actress. There are several movies are awarded Academy Awards, such as The Fly in 1986, Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1992, and The Lord of the Rings in 2001 and 2003. Frida and I have the same facial structure, however, Frida didn't wear the makeup, therefore, and there are still some differences between us. We have done some prosthetics, but Miramax doesn't want me to change even though I want to wear the mustache. The similarities are really scary.

Lesson One-War Paint

Summary

This talks about Abbott Thayer, who is a famous painter and he has another artistic interest was camouflage and the origination and the usage of camouflage. It comes from the French word camoufler, meaning to blind or to veil. The usually usage of camouflage is a kind of protective concealment which protects itself from being seen by enemies. The way is that they disguise an object or a person to avoid being recognized by an enemy soldier or an enemy airplane. Before Thayer’s time, hiding has been use as a military strategy and different forms of camouflage. Obliteration methods works by blending. The gradation between white and dark on the creature’s surface is a camouflage from being discovered by the predator or, on the other hand, the creatures they are hunting. They may blend themselves with either its surroundings or something unlike itself. The animal camouflage works by disruption can make the creatures look like disappear or appear. Biologists don’t believe that animals’ color can attract their mates or frighten predators in Thayer’s methods. But soldier leaders believe that it is useful in the war nowadays. Hiding became an important thing by World War I was due to the survey of airplane. Planes were
usually take pictures of enemy installation and troop action. The first use of camouflage units was in armies. France was the first country to use it in 1915. Camouflage units were used because the commander was an artist and many of his soldiers were in the design business. (Example: architects, designers and painters.) After the French army introduced camouflage many other countries decided to adapt its use. It was successful that thousands of ships were painted odd patterns which could confuse enemy submarines in early 1900s. The Indies of American use paints and symbols to decorate themselves and share their traditional stories. Different pigments can be made from various sources. After being dried over a fire, the pigments were finely ground into a powder. They were then mixed weigh fat for storage and with hot water when they were to be used. The colorful mixes were then applied with a variety of brushes fashioned from sticks and bones. Nowadays, we don't draw the war pain on face; however, it's common to see the 'war paint" on women's face, we call it "make-up". Basically, their functions are quite similar, that is to draw attention away from the features being concealed, and show the best part to people.

Lesson Two-Modern-Day Pirates

Summary
This paragraph talks about the dressing of romantic images of pirates are out of date, and hundreds of pirate attacks are committed on international shipping routes each year. Furthermore, it will state the definition of piracy of The International Piracy Reporting Centre. The International Piracy Reporting Centre defines piracy as a violent act of boarding or attempting to board any ship which is berthed, at anchor or at sea. Petty thefts are doing with the thieves are armed. Most of piracies use high technology to undertake their robbery. They use radar to find out weak ship to attack and then kill the owners. Finally, they change the original route to secret port and sell owners possessions. According to the statistics in 2000, piracy attacks has reached 469 cases, including 202 hostage taking and 72 deaths; however, sometimes the crew made it up to become frauds. The marine police rescued a raft to find the crew safe but each had all their valuables packed in their suitcases. Many ships are equipped with an unobtrusive alarm system for adding security; however the message can’t be detected by someone on board or the ships at nearby. Pirates drive the small boats, using ladders to attack a lot of big ships. In order to protect themselves, they set a system, which can shock pirates. If there is any contact, the crew will be announced by the system. It is rare to see piracy on the sea instead of ones which occur everyday in our daily life. Intellectual property is a concept that ideas play more influential roles and more and more developed dependent economics rely on it rather than their natural resources. This paragraph talks about the question above the paragraph. How often have you done each of the following? It says that if you have done the following you would be considered as a modern pirate or at least have helped pirates. It concludes by introducing the problem of using illegal software or engaging in other illegal practices mentioned above. Copy products which are pirated must be sold in double price in order to make the same authorized producer gain the same profit. People who create software will be discouraged by the software piracy. Because they think that creating new software will be pirated in the end. It becomes a trend that people using things from the Internet without paying money. It's talking about the four approaches to defend the piracy. They are education, legal prosecution, copy protection, and compromise.

Lesson One-Women Pirates

Summary

It states there were the hundreds of women pirates in our history which people often overlooked. It may be a myth that one of the earliest women pirates appeared. Alwilda was promised in marriage to Prince Alf. However, Alwilda was discouraged that she decided to get away. She was dressed in men's clothes and sailed to the Baltic Sea with her female friends. Alwilda became the new captain on the ship of which had lost their captain and they had a battle with Denmark. Finally, the pirates give up and she decide to marry the Prince of Denmark and
became the Queen of Denmark. Anne Bonny was born in a wealthy family; however, she eloped with one of the pirates, furthermore she had a fierce and violent temper. This paragraph is about that Bonny, as a female pirate, frightened the crew she was attacking with a stolen boat and covered herself and the boat with turtle blood. Because of her prowess, she attacked other pirates' notice and burned sown her father's plantation for disinheriting her. Bonny made friend with John Rackham whose nickname is Calico Jack. He was a pirate, and his name came from the odd fabric in his pants. Bonny knew she would be executed because she tried to murder her father. Bonny wanted to assassinate the captain of the a ship. While he slept, Bonny poured the water into the cannons on his ship so that the cannons were unable to fire; hence, Bonny got all treasure. This paragraph talks about the capture of the pirate Anne Bonny. After her last brave fight she was captured. After her friend John Rackman was hung she said she was sorry to see him in this awakward situation. However, he had fought like a man but he has to die like a dog. The paragraph ends talking about there was no record in what happened to Anne Bonny. Was she executed or did she escape execution to become a nun?
Cheng I Sao was a woman who took in charge her deceased husband's piratical fleet which consisted of over 1500 ships that plundered the traffic on sea and towns from the whole Chinese coast to the far Malaysia. Cheng's battle plans and discipline were incredibly ruthless. She often used brute force and discipline as the punishments. The pirate offered two choices to the towns--extortion or destruction. The Chinese navy was too weak to fight back to the pirate. Cheng negotiated for her pirates to the government.
